Materials described here date predominantly from 1957 to 1984 with some collected reference materials dating from ca.1900. Items include correspondence and other collected documents pertaining to George Swinton’s activities as an author and educator as well as a collector and scholar of Inuit art. Materials describe here date to between 1961 and 1978 but primarily date from 1974 to 1978 when George Swinton acted as a consultant to the ICI. Documents primarily consist of correspondence between Swinton and officers of the ICI, especially the Executive Directors. Swinton was also copied on correspondence between the officers of ICI and others, such as the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) and funding agencies. Also described here are ICI administrative documents, minutes of meetings of the Board of ICI between 1974 and 1978 and materials pertaining to ICI programming.

Materials described here consist of reference and research materials as well as correspondence acquired by George Swinton and pertaining to major collections of Inuit art held by museums and galleries as well as in private and corporate collections. Items also include correspondence pertaining to the planning of exhibitions for which Swinton acted as curator or for which he acted as a consultant. Also found here are items of personal correspondence which might have been more appropriately described as part of the series ‘Correspondence with Individuals’ or ‘Organisations’, and correspondence pertaining to the collection of research images. Materials described here also include correspondence between George Swinton and the National Gallery Extension Services in his capacity as Director of Exhibitions for Gallery 1.1.1 at the University of Manitoba.
