Materials described here date from 1958 to 1982 and consist of correspondence between George Swinton and the Canadian federal government department responsible for northern affairs as well as other material (including reports, planning documents, research papers, and press releases) pertaining to the operations of the department in supporting the production and marketing of Inuit art.

Ethnology and Archaeology

Materials described here date from 1963 to 1982 and consist of correspondence as well as research and study materials collected by George Swinton on the topics of Inuit art and culture, especially pertaining to the pre-contact/pre-historic periods. Also described here are items pertaining to an “Urgent Ethnology Program” proposal to document vanishing cultural practises and the “Thule Archaeological Conservation Project” as well as the expected impact of a US embargo on whalebone carvings and materials pertaining to the development of policies on archaeological sites by the government of the North West Territories.

Seminars, Conferences and Speeches

Materials described here consist of items pertaining to seminars and conferences dealing with Inuit art and cross-cultural studies, some of which were organized by the Inuit Cultural Institute (ICI). Items include planning materials and notes made by George Swinton and pertaining to Conferences Swinton helped organize as well as copies of papers and articles by others. Topics are wide-ranging and include materials that pertain to items described elsewhere.

Special Topics

Materials described here consist of files pertaining to special projects pertaining to Inuit traditions and culture, including the “Inuit Traditions” oral history project as well as other projects dealing with music, games and ceramics.

Clothing Patterns

The over 200 patterns of traditional Inuit clothing were made by artisans throughout the Canadian Arctic and Greenland, including older patterns of garments not made today. Many have syllabic notations and instructions written on them. The traditional layout of each pattern piece on caribou, seal, rabbit, or bird and assorted other types of skins is included for most patterns. All patterns include the artisan's name [some appear to be male] and community. Many of these patterns were included in Jill's dissertation and publications. The patterns in this collection do not represent the traditional method of cutting out material for clothing. Traditionally, seamstresses, through years of training and practice, rely on hand and eye measurements to determine how to cut their sewing material. These patterns were created specifically for the researcher in order to document their distinct styles and construction techniques. The patterns come in various styles. Most are specific to gender (men's boots, woman's amautik). There are also some age specific items, including children's clothing, as well as doll clothing patterns. The patterns are made of a variety of materials including waxed paper, lined paper, packing paper, maps, newspapers, school paper, stiff paper board, and fabric. There is a pair of seal-skin fur mittens, one of which has had the stitching removed. One of the pattern artists created the amautik donated by Drs. Oakes and Riewe: Ulayok Lucy Kaviok. It is possible that the patterns from Grise Fiord are those of the other seamstress whose garment is included in the donation, Tataga Akpaleeapik. It is not known if any of the patterns were used to create any of the three items donated.

The items described here consist of one Amauti/Duffle/Amoutik pattern drawn by Anita Iblanit of Paalirmiut in Arviat. The pieces are drawn on thin, stiff, white paper. The items described here consist of pattern pieces for a woman's inner Amauti drawn Meg Kuksuk ofTasiujamiut. It is described as a caribou parka. The pieces are on brown paper and the backing for self-adhesive plastic. The folder consists of six pattern pieces, one envelope containing six miniature pattern pieces, and the original folder label.
