Between 1953 and 1966, the government department responsible for northern affairs was known as the Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources. After 1966, a dedicated department known as the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development was created. In the early days of the development of markets for contemporary Inuit art, the federal government was closely involved by encouraging the establishment of marketing cooperatives and through the creation of advisory bodies such as the Canadian Eskimo Arts Council.
